How can you play Sims 2 without an original cd?

I am having troubles playing my Sims 2 and i really have no clue what to do, and im afraid that if i buy another expansion pack, that wont work and it will be a waste of money. Im looking for any cheats, tips, websites... PLEASE HELP!!
