Sims 2 won't let me click on anything?

I'm using the Sims 2 Double Deluxe on a Windows XP laptop and whenever I go to click on something the menu won't stay up long enough for me to choose what I want to do. Btw, the expansion packs I have are Bon Voyage, Seasons, University, Glamour Life Stuff, and Teen Style Stuff. Anybody have any ideas of what could be wrong and what I could do to fix it?
