Buddha made clear that... women cannot achieve enlightenment ?

Buddha never ever said that. May be this is a hindu idea. 'Purity' in physical form is not a buddhist concept. Buddhism emphasis on purity of the 'heart'/mind only. The basic form of the mind of a male is exactly similar to female.
